Ballet is a highly disciplined stage art based on the centuries-old tradition of movement. It is a mixture of several different types of art: Dance, Music, Drama and Poetry. Students of ballet learn the foundation of all dance, particularly body alignment and the basis movement.
Ballet classes are offered at three levels. Ballet I (ages 7+) is for beginning dancers who need to master basic ballet skills. Ballet II (placement) builds on these skills, and Ballet III (placement) is designed for the advanced dancer. Students interested in Pointe (placement) will need to be evaluated by the instructor to ensure readiness for the safety of the dancer.
Jazz dance takes place with an existing song or movement pattern; the dancers "feel & fill out" variation based on the feelings of the performer. Jazz is the physical embodiment of popular music of the given time.
At our studio, we combine our jazz technique with lyrical, tap or modern - depending on the level. The class is offered at three levels, and placement is determined by staff recommendation. Students must be at least 7 years old to enroll in our Jazz/Tap I class.
Lyrical dance combines jazz and ballet techniques making a slow, yet powerful movement that uses the words of the song to define the dance. Dancers in this technique usually dance barefoot or in lyrical sandals. Expression from the dancer is key to making this type of dance meaningful and enjoyable.
Lyrical dance is offered as a class in conjunction with our Jazz/Modern II and III classes in a 1.5 hour combination course.
Modern dance is performing art. Dancers move in and through, creating shapes and patterns. Modern dancers use their bodies as instruments to express in a creative and striking way, moods, feelings, and ideas. Through modern dance, students strengthen their muscles and become confident in the use of their bodies, at the same time learning concentration and self-discipline. They also become aware of line, movement, rhythm, spatial relationships, and other art forms.
Modern dance at our studio is introduced in our pre-school classes as creative movement (Rising Rainbows and Shining Stars). Modern offered as a class in conjunction with our Jazz/Lyrical II and III classes in a 1.5 hour combination course.
Hip Hop refers to street dance styles that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. The music is usually up-beat, fun and funky. Hip hop includes such techniques as breaking, popping and locking. Students learn the importance of isolation and texture in dance.
At our studio it is important that students have a basic understanding of dance technique before enrolling in hip hop class. Understanding basic body positioning is essential for learning the intricate movements necessary for this discipline. Placement in our hip hop classes is at the discretion of the instructor.

Tap dance is a style of American theatrical dance. It is distinguished by percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. Some descriptive terms are: brush, flap, shuffle, ball change and cramp roll. The sources of tap dance include the Irish step dance and English clog dancing. Tap dancers wear "taps" on the bottom of their shoes which serve as the instruments for the beautiful rhythms that are so eloquently executed.
Tap dance is introduced in our pre-school & transition classes - Rising Rainbows, Shining Stars and Butterflies. Tap is offered in combination with Jazz in our Jazz/Tap I class. It is also offered as its own technique in our Tap II class.
Pre-School & Transition Program
2.5 to young 4 year olds
Creative dance is the precursor to Modern dance for pre-school aged children. Our Rising Rainbows program is focused on strengthening fine and gross motor skills, confidence and improving the ability to work well with others.
Each semester is broken into blocks to focus on a particular dance skill. Rising Rainbows begin with Creative Cuties, then Ballerina Babies, and finally Tiny Tappers. The semester ends with our "Taking The Stage" block which helps our little dancers prepare for our Christmas and Spring Shows.
Older 4 & 5 year olds
Our Shining Stars program builds on the content introduced in Rising Rainbows. Students continue to develop basic understanding of dance technique and become more aware of movement, rhythm, and spatial awareness. Each semester is organized into blocks similar to our program: Modern Movers, Ballerina Babies, Tiny Tappers, and Jazzy Jammers.
Older 5 & 6 year olds
Our NEW butterflies program is designed to transition our young dancers from our pre-school program into our level I classes. We study Modern, Jazz, Ballet and Tap. In this class we place more of a focus on choreography and remembering dances. This will help ease our younger dancers as they grow and move into our older dance classes.
East Indian dancing is a very spiritual experience for those who perform it. Each movement has a special meaning or message. The movements are more controlled and may take years to master. East Indian is very similar to that of Oriental dance. In most areas of the Far East, dance is taught to girls at a very young age. For example, the eyes have to be trained early to be able to fully execute the necessary expression for the dance performance. In India, the training is similar. Indian dancers are trained in how to be flexible and to be able to hold beautiful, elaborate poses. East Indian is a beautiful dance style full of culture and tradition.
*Students must be at least 10 years of age to attend our East Indian class.
